Massachusetts Foreclosures Continue To Rise

BOSTON (AP) -- The boom in home foreclosures in Massachusetts shows little sign of slowing.

The Warren Group, a Boston-based publisher of real estate data, says foreclosure petitions statewide rose 44 percent in October compared with the same month a year ago.

Petitions totaled 3,040, marking the second month the monthly total has topped 3,000 since the Warren Group began tracking such data two years ago.

Petitions are the first step toward foreclosure, but don't necessarily lead to homeowners losing their properties.

Foreclosure deeds, in which the owner loses the home, also are up compared with a year ago. In November, foreclosure deeds rose 72 percent from the same month a year ago. However, the 638 deeds in November was down from 739 in October.
